Verifiable Credentials 2.0 Is Now a W3C Standard—What It Means for Aviary Tech
On 15 May 2025 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) promoted the Verifiable Credentials 2.0 family of seven specifications to full Web Standard status. This milestone makes open, interoperable digital credentials part of the Web’s core stack.
Why VC 2.0 matters
- Broader trust model – Selective disclosure and agile cryptography strengthen privacy and future‑proofing.
- Unified toolbox – Data Integrity proofs, JOSE/COSE support, EdDSA / ECDSA cryptosuites, and Bitstring Status Lists are now part of the same package.
- Ready for adoption – The spec suite gives governments and businesses a stable foundation for digital ID, supply‑chain audit trails, and seamless age or rights checks.
How Aviary Tech is already aligned
- AV1 product suite – Aces (issuer), Vetch (verifier), and 1Keep (wallet) already speak VC 2.0 JSON‑LD with Data Integrity proofs.
- Status Lists at scale – Our high‑volume revocation service maps one‑to‑one with the new Bitstring Status List format.
- Ordinals bridge – Ordinals Plus embeds VC 2.0 metadata inside Bitcoin inscriptions, and Ordinals Reserve turns them into curated, tradable collections with on‑chain provenance.
- Extensible cryptography – Our SDKs ship with Ed25519, ECDSA, and BBS. Any new cryptosuite from VC 2.0 drops straight in.
What’s next
- Showcase sessions – Book a 30‑minute sandbox demo of Aces or Vetch running an end‑to‑end VC 2.0 flow.
- Early‑access program – Apply for the limited beta of Ordinals Reserve to trial public, tradable credentials on Bitcoin.
- Feedback loop – Share your toughest credential challenge. We will build a proof‑of‑concept and publish the results.
